Welcome to 4th Grade Social Studies!
Hello Parents and Caregivers,
I hope the first few weeks of school have been enjoyable for your student. I know I have enjoyed having them so far this school year. We have started the school year with mapping skills. Students have been learning how to use a compass rose and practicing cardinal and intermediate directions. Next week when students return from the long weekend, we will begin map scale and relative/absolute location. There will be a quiz over mapping skills but I will send out more information about that closer to the date! The students first assignment was completed today during class. If students scored less than 60%, then they may make corrections and send in to school the next day for PARTIAL credit. Please email if you have any questions: [email protected].

Students are completing the mapping unit this week and will have a quiz on Thursday September 21! The topics included on the mapping quiz are as follows: map scale, map keys, compass rose, directions, absolute and relative location. There will always be a vocabulary section on each quiz or test. Those vocabulary words can be found in students social studies notebooks, which they are allowed to bring home before the quiz. Students will also bring home a grade for a project they completed last week called My Trip Across Ohio. This was a project to help them practice map scale! If you are curious to see your students work, you can find the final draft of the project in their google drive accounts. Let me know if you have any questions!

Last week we began our Native Americans unit. Students learned about prehistoric Native American cultures and looked at the differences within each culture. This week students are reading about the historic Native American tribes that lived in Ohio and what types of activities, homes, natural resources and tools they used. We will be discussing timeline in the weeks to follow and the cooperation and conflict between the tribes and the new settlers coming to Ohio. This week the first quarter of the school year ends. So please be on the lookout for grade cards coming home next Friday, October 27!

I can't believe December is here! Students have been learning about the original 13 Colonies for the last two weeks. Next week, we will begin the road to the American Revolution! Those topics include: French and Indian War, Boston Tea Party, Stamp Act and more. In the past students have really enjoyed this topic and of course the Revolutionary War. This Friday, December 1, students will be taking a short map quiz over the 13 colonies. I sent an email to parents that have provided an email including a blank map of the colonies and answer key to help with studying. The quiz results will be on schoology, so please check progress book or schoology for those results. On December 14 students will have their final quiz for the second quarter. I will send home a study guide prior to this quiz to help prepare students. This quiz will be about the American Revolution and the 13 Colonies. Below is the blank map and map key for the 13 colonies map quiz!

I hope your child has had a successful start to the new year! The month of January was a little crazy with all of the snow days, so there are only a few grades available for the third quarter so far. This Friday February 2, students will be taking the Northwest Territory and War of 1812 quiz! An email was sent out on Tuesday to inform parents or guardians of this quiz. Please let me know if you are not receiving those emails so that I may add you to this list. Next week we will begin our next unit, transportation, immigration and westward expansion. Please feel free to email with any questions or concerns that you may have.
